What are microchips and why should your pet have one?

Microchips are a form of permanent identification for your animal. Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner. The microchip number is recorded in a database that contains information about the animal and contact information of the owner.

About one in three pets will go missing at some point in their lifetime. Unlike a collar, which can easily break, fall off, or be removed, a microchip is a reliable way to get your contact information—as well as vital information about your pet’s medical conditions—and increase the odds he’ll be returned to you if he’s found. The first thing animal shelters do is scan for a microchip. No one wants to see a dog or cat in a shelter, especially their own!

Un animal marqué avec une puce électronique et enregistré dans une banque de données et peut être identifié au Luxembourg ou à l’étranger au moyen d’un lecteur. Le code numérique permet de déterminer les détenteurs enregistrés dans la banque de données. Grâce à la puce électronique, les animaux trouvés peuvent être restitués rapidement à leur détenteur. Nur ein gechiptes Haustier ist registriert und in einer Datenbank gespeichert. Dadurch kann im Fall von einem entlaufenen Tier der Besitzer schnell gefunden werden. Alle anderen vermissten Tiere können im Fall der Fälle nur sehr schwer oder gar nicht an die Halter zurückvermittelt werden. Sie landen in Tierheimen, wo sie manchmal viele Tage, Wochen oder sogar Jahre ihr Dasein fristen müssen. Ohne professionelle Hilfe ist ein Wiederfinden des Tieres reine Glückssache. Im schlimmsten Fall sieht man sein Tier nie wieder.
